Introduction
Since artificial intelligence is becoming more advanced, wireless networks must process larger amounts of data at better speeds. Even though current networks are enough to handle modern technology, with the rise of AI and other new tech, these networks need to get more efficient and powerful. In order to help solve this problem, researchers at Northeastern University are working on the Open6G+AI. The project is aimed at developing new 6G networks that can manage themselves with little human management.
Who is working on the project?
Specifically, the Open6G+AI project is handled and led by researchers at Northeastern University’s Institute for Intelligent Networked Systems. Some organizations that are helping with the project are OpenAirInterface, the O-RAN Software Community, OpenRAN Gym, and various wireless networking organizations. The project is mainly paid for by the National Science Foundation because 6G networks will be needed in the future for advanced technology. Another benefit of the project is it brings researchers who are specialized in artificial intelligence, wireless communication, and computer engineering together.
What is the Open6G+AI Project?
The main goal of the Open6G+AI Project is to create an open source platform for AI controlled wireless networks. This means that these newer networks will use AI models to control network traffic, optimize the connections and automatically adjust systems for the best possible performance. If everything goes well the Open6G+AI project will be able to improve network speed and efficiency so new technology can run smoothly. The project also focuses on solving fragmentation problems in wireless research since many researchers use applications that cannot collaborate easily. Open6G+AI will combine these applications into one system that can be used simply in one place.
How does the project work?
The project uses artificial intelligence systems called “AI-RAN” agents that monitor network conditions. The AI agents make decisions on their own based on previously learned information, data and patterns. AI agents can analyze data traffic, detect network problems, and reconfigure wireless systems without requiring direct human control. The platform combines radio access networks, cloud systems and AI software into a testing environment for researchers. Researchers test the system using real wireless hardware and open source software platforms.
Northeastern’s Impact
The Open6G+AI project reveals how Northeastern University is becoming more advanced in its research of artificial intelligence and communication networks. By combining the fields of AI and communication networks, the future of technology can be achieved with new technology being able to be sustained. The project could influence how future cities, fields and autonomous systems communicate and operate around the world.
